Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55165
mintmark to right of crown
from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 10212
mintmark to left of crown

The first specimen was lot 55165 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Krone (4 Mark), 1653. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik III. PCGS Genuine--Surfaces Smoothed, VF Details. From the Collection of Richard Evans Norton (1872-1946)." The second specimen was lot 10212 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €3,120 (about US$3,252). The catalog description[2] noted, "DENMARK. Krone, 1653. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik III. NGC AU-58. Extremely rare variation that doesn't connect to any other coins in the die chain. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Vilhelm Bergsøe Collection (Copenhagen-1890) Lot # 242." Danish crowns of the seventeenth century range from the scarce to the obscenely rare. The first example was catalogued as KM 194.5 by the auctioneers. We think it is more likely to be KM 194.1, which is much more common. Kroner were issued in numerous varieties in 1653.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.671 fine silver, 42 mm diameter, the second specimen 21.66 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-3574; KM-194.1; Sieg-49.1; H-95A. The second specimen is KM-194.1a; Hede-95A; Sieg-49.1; Schou-49; Aagaard-25.1; Bruun-6105.
