Denmark H3064-30689r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30689 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $7,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Frederik III Speciedaler 1657-HK MS62 NGC. Two-year type. Displaying no obvious signs of highpoint wear, with noticeable luster in the fields and attractive patina that mostly clings to the edges. A bit of doubling is visible on both sides, and while some of it is present on the portrait, full legibility remains in the legends. Very rare quality for the issue. From the Jamestown Collection."

Danish crowns of the seventeenth century range from the scarce to the obscenely rare. Either they were melted extensively or the poverty of the king prevented large issues or both. This rare type was struck 1657 and 1661.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.78 g, 0.875 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Hede-57A, Dav-3546, KM 212.
