Künker sale 403, lot 1329

This specimen was lot 1329 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,247 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST GREGOR XIII., 1572-1585. Die Münzstätte Ancona. Testone (3 Giuli) 1575, Ancona. Sehr schön. (Papal States, Gregory XIII, 1572-85, testone or triple giulio of 1575, Ancona mint. Very fine.)"

Pope Gregory is best remembered today for promulgating in 1582 the reformed calendar known as Gregorian. The reverse of this testone shows the date marked on the Holy Door (1575 was a jubilee year) with IVSTIS PATET around.
