This specimen was lot 1125 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €240 (about US$299 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANCE, Louis-Philippe (1830-1848), AV 20 francs, 1831 B, Rouen. Tête nue. Tranche en creux. Rare. Petites griffes. Très Beau. (France, Louis-Philippe (1830-48), gold twenty francs of 1831, Rouen mint, bare head, sunken lettering on edge. Rare, light scratches, very fine.)"
The type is also known for 1830-A (Paris mint), 1831-T (Nantes mint), 1831-A (Paris mint) and 1831-W (Lille mint) but all the other dates are rare. In 1832 the Tiolier bust was dropped in favor of the Domard bust, which was used until the end of the regime in 1848.
Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.45 grams, 0.900 fine gold, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Nicolas-Pierre Tiolier, 1784-1853.
Recorded Mintage: 88,184[1] (a better date; mintage includes F.525/3 with raised edge lettering).
Catalog reference: Gad-1030; F.524/3, Fr-553.
