This specimen was lot 7162 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $164.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 2 Kopek, 1799-EM. Paul I (1796-1801). NGC MS-64 BN. Sharply struck near gem example with smooth attractive even chocolate patina." This type is listed for 1797-1801 and was produced at the Annensk (mintmark AM), Ekaterinburg (mintmark EM) and Kolyvan (mintmark KM, shown here) mints. The auction cataloguers erred in attributing this to the Ekaterinburg mint; this specimen clearly bears the KM mintmark for Kolyvan. It resulted in a bargain for the buyer as that mint is rather scarcer. Later types were considerably reduced in weight.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 20.48 g, copper.
