This specimen was lot 71328 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Platinum 5 Yuan, 1997. Panda Series. PCGS Genuine--Edge Damaged, Unc Details Gold Shield. Despite the noted edge damage, an alluring overall example of this more difficult type." This specimen was offered again as lot 51384 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $660. Altho the regime has steadily issued panda coins in silver and gold since 1983, platinum issues are sporadic. Platinum five yuan pandas were struck 1993-97 and this one has the highest catalog value, suggesting that the 5,000 made did not all sell.
Recorded mintage: 5,000.
Specification: 1.56 g, platinum, 14 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Fr-B34; KM-985; PAN-298a.
