This specimen was lot 944 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €200 (about US$294 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1633, Anvers. Premier type. D/ B. cuir. à d., une grande fraise au col. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver ducaton of 1633, Antwerp mint, first type. Obverse: armored bust to right with large ruffed collar; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions, the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece below. About very fine.)"
Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-23 and 1631-36. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4446) and Tournai (Dav-4450). The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, .985 troy oz ASW, this specimen 31,92 g.
