Aureo sale 261, lot 242

This specimen was lot 242 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €193 (about US$310 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1634. Felipe IV. Amberes. 1 ducaton. MBC. (Philip IV (1621-65), duchy of Brabant, ducaton of 1634, Antwerp mint, very fine.)"

Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-23 and 1631-36. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4446) and Tournai (Dav-4450). The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors. Double, triple and quadruple ducatons were struck in 1634.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce. This is a common date for the type.

Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, .985 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Vti. 1159, Dav-4444, KM 56.1 (Antwerp).
