Brabant 1633(a) escalin
This specimen was lot 1170 in Jean Elsen sale 153 (Brussels, December 2022), where it sold for €80 (about US$101 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR escalin, 1633, Bruxelles. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et un écu ovale d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Petit éclat sur la tranche. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver escalin of 1633, Brussels mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, bearing a sword and the oval arms of Austria-Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Small rim nick, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck at Antwerp (hand mintmark), Maastricht (star mintmark), 's Hertogenbosch (tree mintmark) and Brussels (angel face mintmark, shown here) 1621-57, as well as Arras, Tournai, Burgundy and Luxembourg. It was called a schelling in the north and was worth six stuivers. Common in low grade, it is very scarce choice.
