Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1221

This specimen was lot 1221 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCHE-COMTE, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR escalin, 1636, Dole. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et l'écu ovale franc-comtois. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Très Beau. Variante très rare avec point initial au droit et la date rétrograde au revers (63-61 donc), qui fut ensuite regravée dans le coin pour la rendre conforme. Cet escalin est contemporain du siège de Dole par l'armée française commandée par le prince de Condé. La ville fut assiégée du 27 mai au 15 août 1636 et résista vaillamment malgré les bombardements intensifs, la famine et une épidémie de peste bubonique. L'armée française se retira en raison de l'arrivée d'une armée de secours. (free county of Burgundy, Philip IV, silver escalin of 1636, Dole mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, bearing a sword and a shield; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross divides the date. Very Fine. A very rare variety with a dot on the obverse and retrograde date on the reverse which has been reengraved. This escalin is contemporaneous with the siege of Dole by the French army commanded by the prince of Conde. The town was besieged May to August 1636 and resisted valiantly despite famine, being bombarded and an outbreak of the plague. The French army retreated upon the arrival of reinforcements.)"

We have filed this coin with the issues of the Spanish Netherlands even tho the Franche Comte is not part of the Low Countries. It was, however, under the same administration. This coin is not listed under Burgundy; the closest equivalents we can find are escalins of Brabant (KM 52), Flanders (KM 31) and Tournai (KM 41).
