SB1122-72259r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72259 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Brabant. 1/2 Ducaton, 1636. Brussels Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. This eye-catching piece shows ostentatious rainbow toning and a small spot of dark corrosion that accounts for the designation. The surfaces are gently handled, displaying intricate details on the portrait and elaborate reverse crowned arms. Much luster remains, heightening the coin's flashy appeal. A pleasing example, offering finer detail than typically encountered for the type. From the Pat Johnson Collection." The regular type, issued 1628-37 from Antwerp (with hand mintmark) and Brussels, is very scarce. The other provinces issued this type, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.24 g, 0.944 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-60.1; Delm-289.
