Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 72362 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. 1/2 Patagon, 1636. Antwerp Mint. Philip IV. NGC VF Details--Cleaned. This pleasant looking example displays light attractive mottled gray patina with areas of richer coloration. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued and attractive." Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-56 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at Brussels, s'Hertogenbosch and Maastricht. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders. Altho the half and quarter patagons are much scarcer than the patagons, they bring less at auction. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.05 g, 0.875 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-46.4.
