Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1215

This specimen was lot 1215 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €95 (about US$126 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCHE-COMTE, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), billon carolus, 1614, Dole. Deuxième type. D/ B. des archiducs en regard. R/ Ecu franc-comtois sous la date. Légère faiblesse de frappe. Très Beau. (free county of Burgundy, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, billon carolus of 1614, Dole mint, second type. Obverse: facing busts of the archdukes; reverse: provincial arms below the date. Slightly weakly struck, Very Fine.)"

We have filed this coin with the issues of the Spanish Netherlands even tho the Franche Comte is not part of the Low Countries. It was, however, under the same administration. This coin is not listed under Burgundy; the closest equivalents we can find are billon quarter reales of Brabant (KM 26), Flanders (KM 5) and Tournai (KM 9). These were 1.74 g, 0.396 fine silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon; this specimen 1,55 g.

Catalog reference: Rob-7107, KM unlisted, V.H. 633; Dole R25b (photo 1, this example).
