Künker sale 294, lot 3202

This specimen was lot 3202 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,122 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL, KÖNIGREICH, Johann V. 1706-1750. 4.800 Reis (Nennwert: 4.000 Reis = Moeda) 1708, Lissabon. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 63. GOLD. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (kingdom of Portugal, John V, 1706-50, moidore of 1708. Lisbon mint, in NGC MS-63 holder. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was minted in Lisbon 1707-22 and was the largest gold coin prior to the introduction of the peça (6400 réis), at which time the moidore was reduced to 8.06 g. The reduced size moidore was struck only in Brazil.

Specification: 10.78 g, 0.917 fine gold, 30 mm diameter.
