Portugal 1709 4000 reis
This specimen was lot 32162 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: João V gold 4000 Reis 1709 AU55 NGC, Lisbon mint. Light red toning throughout. Some minor adjustment marks are noted on the obverse. Light wear and a few too many hairlines prevent this coin from achieving a higher numerical grade, though it is nonetheless a very eye appealing piece, all things considered. From the Ipanema Collection." This type was minted in Lisbon 1707-22 and was the largest gold coin prior to the introduction of the peça (6400 réis), at which time the moidore was reduced to 8.06 g. The reduced size moidore was struck only in Brazil.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 10.78 g, 0.917 fine gold.
