This specimen was lot 30340 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 4000 Reis 1710-(L) AU Details (Harshly Cleaned) NGC, Lisbon mint. Despite the details assignment, this is a somewhat uncommon type that is difficult to acquire, featuring antique-golden tone and stylistically pleasing design elements." This type was minted in Lisbon 1707-22 and was the largest gold coin prior to the introduction of the peça (6400 réis), at which time the moidore was reduced to 8.06 g. The reduced size moidore was struck only in Brazil.
