Künker sale 264, lot 3287

This specimen was lot 3287 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €220 (about US$284 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Johann V. 1706-1750. 1.200 Reis (Nennwert: 1.000 Reis = Quartinho) 1710, Lissabon. GOLD. Winz. Kratzer, sehr schön. (kingdom of Portugal, quartinho of 1710, Lisbon mint. Scratched, very fine.)"

This quartinho was struck 1707-47 at Lisbon. With a forty year production run, one would suppose this coin to be common, and it is priced low in the SCWC, but it is in fact seldom seen.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 2.69 g, 0.917 fine gold, .079 troy oz AGW, 18 mm diameter, this specimen 2.59 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-98; Gomes-88.04, KM 182.
