Portugal 1722 6400 reis
This specimen was lot 25506 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $46,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 4 Escudos (Peca) 1722-L, AU58 NGC, lightly toned and lustrous with minimal handling in the fields, extremely rare type struck in 1722 only with the L mintmark for Lisbon. The edge is the original 'corda' or oblique milling, which is a significantly rarer variety than the later triangular reeding." This rare type was the precursor to the 6400 réis or "joe" struck in large quantities in Portugal and Brazil in the eighteenth century.
