This specimen was lot 30343 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,034. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 4000 Reis 1722 AU55 NGC, Lisbon mint. Nearly mark-free with full, shimmering luster in the fields and a strike that nears completion. A rather charming example of this final-year-of-type issue." This type was minted in Lisbon 1707-22 and was the largest gold coin prior to the introduction of the peça (6400 réis), at which time the moidore was reduced to 8.06 g. The reduced size moidore was struck only in Brazil.
