Sincona sale 59, lot 1852

This specimen was lot 1852 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,422 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL | Königreich, João V. 1706-1750. 4000 Reis 1707, Lissabon. Äusserst selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. Prachtexemplar. (kingdom of Portugal, John V, 1706-50, 4000 réis of 1707, Lisbon mint. Extremely rare, especially in this condition, Good extremely fine, Cabinet piece.)"

This type was minted in Lisbon 1707-22 and was the largest gold coin prior to the introduction of the peça (6400 réis), at which time the moidore was reduced to 8.06 g. The reduced size moidore was struck only in Brazil.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: 10.76 g, 0.917 fine gold, 30 mm diameter, this specimen 10.88 g.
