For some reason, Portugal struck the smaller silver denominations without dates. This coin traded for fifty réis (meio tostão) despite being marked "XXXX". It was accompanied by sixty réis (3 vinténs), eighty réis (tostão) and 120 réis (6 vinténs). The practice did not end until the decimal reform of 1837. The larger silver coins were dated.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.5 g, 0.917 fine silver, 17 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 199.
