This specimen was lot 73200 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 50 Reis, ND (1688-1706). Lisbon Mint. Pedro II. PCGS EF-45. Presenting even wear across the high points, this specimen features deeper toning among the recesses." For some reason, Portugal struck the smaller silver denominations without dates. This coin traded for fifty réis (meio tostão) despite being marked "XXXX". This denomination was also struck at Porto (KM 137) with "P's" instead of rosettes. It was accompanied by sixty réis (3 vinténs), one hundred réis (tostão) and 120 réis (6 vinténs). The practice did not end until the decimal reform of 1837. The larger silver coins were dated.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-136.
