Portugal (1683-1706) 120 reis
The first specimen was lot 74466 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 120 Reis, ND (1683-06). Pedro II. PCGS AU-58. A particularly eye catching piece owing to the flashy luster in the fields and vibrant iridescent toning. The devices are sharp, showing impressive originality." For some reason, Portugal struck the smaller silver denominations without dates. This coin traded for 120 réis or six vinténs (hence the six rosettes on the obverse). This denomination was also struck at Porto (KM 158) with "P's" instead of rosettes; the Porto product bore dates (1689-93, 1698, 1704). It was accompanied by sixty réis (3 vinténs), one hundred réis (tostão) and fifty réis (meio tostão). The practice did not end until the decimal reform of 1837. The larger silver coins were dated.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4.32 g, 0.917 fine silver, 24 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-143; Gomes-50.01 (first specimen), Gomes 49.01 (second specimen).
