For some reason, Portugal struck the smaller silver denominations without dates. This 120 réis (6 vinténs) was struck during the reign of João V. It was accompanied by forty réis, sixty réis (3 vinténs), fifty réis (meio tostão) and eighty réis (tostão). The practice did not end until the decimal reform of 1837. The larger silver coins were dated. This specimen was lot 32653 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 120 Reis (6 Vintens), ND (1706-50). Joao V. PCGS AU-58. KM-178; Gomes-69.02. Well struck with a great deal of charm. This near-Mint State example is fully original and attractive."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 178.
