For some reason, Portugal struck the smaller silver denominations without dates. This 120 réis (6 vinténs) was accompanied by silver fifty réis (half tostão), sixty réis (3 vinténs) and eighty réis (tostão). Gomes prices the JOSEPHUS obverse lower than the IOSEPHUS obverse but both are common. The practice did not end until the decimal reform of 1837. The larger silver coins were dated.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.7 g, 0.917 fine silver, 24.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 239.1, Gomes-22.01 (JOSEPHUS) and KM 239.2, Gomes 21.01 (IOSEPHUS obverse, shown here).
