Portugal 1707 400 reis
This specimen was lot 73203 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis (Cruzado), 1707. Lisbon Mint. Joao V. PCGS AU-50. A RARE crown, especially so in this wonderful state of originality. Sharply struck on both sides, its details are fully formed and stunningly clear. A soft mottling of gray hues gives the coin added depth and character without taking away from its overall fresh appearance. Finally, the gentle glow from the underlying luster ensures that this beautiful piece will serve as an impressive addition to any collection." This type was struck 1706-08 and 1750; all dates of this cruzado are scarce but the 1750 is the most available. It was marked 400 réis but traded for 480 réis. Other issues of this denomination during this period were in gold. King João V died in 1750, to be succeeded by José I (r. 1750-77).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
