Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 1527

This specimen was lot 1527 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $30,550. The catalog description^[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 10 Ruble, 1757-CNB. NGC EF-40. RARE. Portrait by B. Scott. Mintage of only 8,604 pieces. Attractive orange peel toning in the protected areas." This type introduced the ten ruble denomination. It was minted at St. Petersburg 1755-59 and Moscow 1756-58. All dates are rare. Catherine the Great reduced the coin to 13.08 g in 1764 and likely melted as many of the older coins as she could obtain.
