This specimen was lot 3776 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $1,208. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. 50 Soles, 1966. 100th Anniversary of Peru-Spain Naval Battle. NGC graded MS-66." This specimen was struck to commemorate the victory of the Peruvian fleet over the Spanish in 1866, defeating a Spanish attempt to reconquer Peru. It was accompanied by a range of coins in brass and silver. Altho every specimen minted is presumably still in collectors' hands, it does not appear often.
Recorded mintage: 6,409.
Specification: 23.405 g, 0.900 fine gold, .677 troy oz AGW.
