Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73233
SB223-73233r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73233 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen, 1677. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. PCGS AU-58. Displaying just the slightest degree of handling upon the highest points, this near-Mint stunner possesses much in the way of flair and elegant eye appeal. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This issue of 1677-85 was the third 24 mariengroschen for this state. Equal to two-thirds thaler, it was struck steadily until 1834. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The wild man is the most common design but a few were issued with the leaping stallion reverse (KM 586, 615, 868, 895, 1012, 1033).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-529; Welter-1844.
