from the Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 2147
SB122-2147r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2147 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Escudos, 1594-S B. Seville Mint, Assayer Juan Vicente Bravo (B). Philip II. NGC AU-58. Frosty and lustrous, this handsome example is well centered and struck up showing a bold full four digit date, mint mark and assayers letters. Quite SCARCE, especially in the state of preservation. A lovely example of the type that is sure to please. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Acquired via private treaty from Mike Dunigan." Four escudos were struck for Philip II at Seville, Toledo, Valencia, Valladolid, Madrid, Burgos and Barcelona. The earliest one with a date is known from 1587. Seville struck this type 1589-94 and 1597. Assayer B operated at Seville 1591-97. All of the products of the Seville mint were cobs well into the seventeenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 13.52 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-4159, Fr-158; Cal-898.
