Spain 1594-S B 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 33219 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain. Philip II (1556-1598) gold Cob 2 Escudos 1594 S-B AU55 NGC, Seville mint, By all indications a quite rare mint-date combination for the issue, when these two pieces of information are visible on the coin at all, this being only the second example we have been able to locate coming to auction. At one time missing from both Calico's and Cayon's catalogs, and a thoroughly rare piece." This type was struck 1588-97 and also comes undated. Assayer B is listed for 1591-97. Cob two escudos were also struck at Burgos, Cuenca, Granada, Toledo, Valladolid and Segovia.
