This specimen was lot 33980 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: William III Crown 1696 AU55 PCGS. Third Bust, OCTAVO Edge. Remarkably fine for the usual shallowness of William's coinage, micro-fine flow lines circulating throughout his bust and an olive-pewter backlight pervading throughout the surfaces." The crowns of William III for 1695-1700 vary only slightly but 1697 is the scarcest date. Other varieties (KM 486, 493, 494.2) were struck in 1696.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 29.9-30.3 g, 0.925 fine silver, 38-40 mm diameter.
