from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 20422
France SB818-20422r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20422 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1730-W. Lille Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder. Evenly struck with attractive olive brown color in the centers that turns to blue around the raised design on the reverse. A better date. Ex: Grundy Collection." This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Lille mint. Many Lille mint issues are rare but this one is only scarce. The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.

Recorded mintage: 88,363[2].

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM.

Catalog reference: Dav-1330; KM-486.22; Gad-321; Dr/5 no. 746; Dr/4 № 819, Dr/2 № 579, Dupl-1675.
