This specimen was lot 70286 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1877-As DL. Alamos Mint. NGC-AU Details—Obverse Scratched. This decently preserved gently handled example exhibits a bold strike with even wear on the high points. The fields display somewhat flashy luster with light attractive tone near the edges. Close inspection reveals two scratches in the obverse fields, now slightly toned. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of the type." The Alamos mint in Sinaloa began striking eight reales in 1864. The early issues are rare but become more common after 1873. The 1877 is somewhat scarce. The mint was closed in 1892 along with Chihuahua, Durango, Guadalajara and Hermosillo. Oaxaca and San Luis Potosi were closed in 1893.
Recorded mintage: 515,000.
Specification: 27.07 g, .903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
