Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 199

This specimen was lot 199 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR cinquième d'écu aux rameaux d'olivier, 1731AA, Metz. D/ B. habillé à g., décoré de la croix du Saint-Esprit. R/ Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Très rare Gradé PCGS VF25. Beau/Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver fifth écu of the olive branch of 1731, Metz mint. Obverse: uniformed bust left, decorated with the cross of the Holy Spirit; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. Very rare, Fine/Very Fine.)"

The fifth écu was the ancien régime version of a twenty cent piece tho never struck in sufficient numbers to really convert France to a decimal currency. It is listed in Droulers for Metz for 1726-28 and 1731 only and all are scarce to rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown[2], a scarce date.
