This specimen was lot 71290 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $1,170. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 4 Reales, 1796-PTS PP. Potosi Mint. Charles IV. PCGS AU-53. While just a touch off-center, this well-preserved minor displays a strong portrait and nice gray toning. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This is an example of a type struck 1791-1808 at Potosi, Bolivia, in the name of Charles IV. Assayer PP is listed for 1795-1802. Harris[2] notes that Potosi four reales of Charles IV are the commonest mint, ahead of Mexico City. Recent hoard finds have only increased this number.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.896 fine silver.
