Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1414

This specimen was lot 1414 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €750 (about US$988 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSIE, Pierre le Grand (1689-1725), AR polupoltinik (1/4 rouble), 1707, Moscou (atelier Kadashesvky). D/ B. l., dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Très rare. Beau à Très Beau. (empire of Russia, Peter the Great, 1689-1725, silver quarter ruble of 1707, Moscow, Kadashevsky mint. Obverse: laureate, draped and armored bust; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Very rare, Fine - Very Fine.)"

This rare type was also struck in 1710. Like many early Russian coins, the date is in Cyrillic characters, a practice abandoned after 1721 in favor of Western style dates.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 7 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 6,99 g.
