from the Stack's Bowers 2017 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72734
Mexico SB517-72734r.jpg

This specimen is a fairly common date of a series struck 1871-96 at the Mexico City mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This specimen was lot 72734 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $117.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1886-MoM. NGC MS-66. Sharply struck with strong flashy luster. Highly attractive."

Specification: 2.71 g, .903 fine silver, .078 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 603,000.

Catalog reference: KM-403.7.
