Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74459

This specimen was lot 74459 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Franc, 1809-A. Paris Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS MS-64. The finest observed in the PCGS census, this near-Gem minor offers a splendid rendition of the emperor along with some deeper toning nearer the edges." This type was struck at numerous mints 1809-14 and a complete set comprises 64 dates and mintmarks. This date from the Paris mint is common.

Recorded mintage: 1,679,429, a common date.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, plain edge, 18 mm diameter, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819).
