Zeeland Alb27-1528r.jpg
Sincona sale 69, lot 920

The first specimen was lot 1528 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ZEELAND: AR ¼ silver ducat, 1776. Lightly hairlined from old wiping, EF to About Unc." The second specimen was lot 920 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 40,000 CHF (about US$53,088 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Zeeland, Provinz. 2 1/2 Dukaten 1776. Goldabschlag von den Stempeln des 1/4 Silberdukaten. Von grösster Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar mit feinem Prägeglanz. (Netherlands, province of Zeeland, 2½ ducats of 1776, off-metal strike using quarter silver ducat dies. Of the highest rarity. NGC MS63, Cabinet piece with nice mint luster.)"

This type was struck in gold 1773-87 and in silver 1762-82, 1785-93. Zeeland seems to be the only province which struck this denomination, worth twelve stuivers, in quantity.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: KM 99: 7.08 g, 0.873 fine silver; KM 99a: 8.35 g, 0.986 fine gold, the second specimen 8.41 g.

Catalog reference: KM 99 (silver), KM 99a (gold), Delmonte 901 (R3).
