Wurzburg 1632 thaler Dav-4560
This specimen was lot 52284 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Wurzburg. Swedish Occupation. Taler, 1632. Wurzburg Mint. Gustav II Adolf. PCGS Genuine--Surfaces Smoothed, EF Details. Variety with small date divided by legend. Emanating from a brief period of Swedish occupation in the bishopric, this crown does display some noted smoothing--a fairly common aspect for the series. Nevertheless, a pleasing and powerful portrait of the Swedish monarch, along with some deeper hues throughout. From the Augustana Collection." This expensive type, struck in many variations, was accompanied by a double thaler and a ducat. The Swedish king was killed in battle in 1632 and we don't know if this type was struck before or after that event.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
