Wurzburg 1632 thaler Dav-4559A
This specimen was lot 4636 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,577 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"WÜRZBURG, BISTUM Unter schwedischer Besatzung. Gustav II. Adolf von Schweden, 1631-1632. Reichstaler 1632, Würzburg. Losungstaler. Münzmeister Matthäus Lauffer. Mit umgelegter Feldbinde auf der Vorderseite und der geteilten Jahreszahl über der Krone auf der Rückseite. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 338, Frankfurt/Main 1994, Nr. 2343 und der Slg. Julius Hagander, Teil 3, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker/Ulf Nordlind 208, Osnabrück 2012, Nr. 7543. (bishopric of Würzburg, under Swedish occupation, Gustavus Adolphus, 1631-32, "ransom" thaler of 1632, Würzburg mint. With a draped sash on the obverse and the crown dividing the date on the reverse. Attractive example with handsome patina, very fine or better.)"
The SCWC mentions this type for 1631 only. Other Würzburg thalers for 1622 include KM 99/Dav-4559B, KM 100/Dav-4560 (without sash), KM 101/Dav-4560A, KM 102/Dav-4560B, KM 103/Dav-4560C and KM 104/Dav-4560D. The Swedish king was killed in battle in 1632 and we don't know if this type was struck before or after that event.
