Künker Auction 440, lot 3642

This specimen was lot 3642 in Künker sale 440 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €550 (about US$757 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WÜRTTEMBERG Karl, 1864-1891. 10 Mark 1872. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Erworben im Juli 1991 aus dem Lager der DG-Bank, München. (kingdom of Württemberg, Charles, 1864-91, ten mark of 1872. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

Karl was king during German unification. A homosexual, he left no children and was succeeded by his nephew. This type was struck 1872-73 as part of the monetary reform of 1872 which introduced the mark.

Recorded mintage: 271,031 plus proofs.

Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold, 19.5 mm diameter, decorated edge.
