Saxony 1872-E 10 mark
This specimen was lot 30073 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Saxony. Johann gold 10 Mark 1872-E MS65 NGC, Dresden mint, Two-year type. Brightly toned with mint bloom that immediately catches the eye and a strike that sharply executes all the waves in Johann's hair as well as the reverse eagle. Very few marks are located on either side without magnified aid; the mark of a true Gem. As a type or date, seldom located any finer. From The Kaiser Collection of German Gold Coins." This type was struck 1872-73 and is slightly scarce but not rare. The gold ten mark of Albert (issued 1874-88) is much more common.
