Wurttemberg 1844 1/2 gulden
This specimen was lot 3618 in Künker sale 440 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €160 (about US$220 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH Wilhelm I., 1816-1864. 1/2 Gulden 1844. Stempelschneider Carl Friedrich Voigt. Fast Stempelglanz. Erworben im Juli 1988 aus dem Lager der Münzhandlung Sonntag, Stuttgart. (kingdom of Württemberg, William I, 1816-64, half gulden of 1844. About uncirculated.)"
King William began his reign as a liberal, granting Württemberg a constitution and reforming taxes, customs duties and agriculture, but grew reactionary after the revolutions of 1848. One gulden was sixty kreuzer. This type was struck 1838-41, 1844-56 and was the smallest denomination struck in good silver.
