Künker Auction 440, lot 3612

This specimen was lot 3612 in Künker sale 440 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €480 (about US$660 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH Wilhelm I., 1816-1864. Doppelgulden 1846. Stempelschneider Carl Friedrich Voigt. Winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Erworben im September 1988 aus dem Lager der Landesgirokasse Stuttgart. (kingdom of Württemberg, William I, 1816-64, double gulden of 1846. Light hairlines, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

King William began his reign as a liberal, granting Württemberg a constitution and reforming taxes, customs duties and agriculture, but grew reactionary after the revolutions of 1848. One gulden was sixty kreuzer. This type was struck 1845-56. In the early 1840's, the vereinsthaler of 18.52 g superseded the earlier convention thaler of 28.06 g and kronenthaler of 29.46 g and the thaler was now too small to serve as a prestige coin. Some states issued double thalers and others, like Württemberg, issued double gulden.

Recorded mintage: 621,249.

Specification: 21.21 g, 0.900 fine silver, 36 mm diameter, decorated edge, this specimen 21,22 g.
