Westfriesland 1792 ducaton Dav-1834
This specimen was lot 34084 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: West Friesland. Provincial Ducaton (Silver Rider) 1792 MS62 NGC. An exquisite example, draped in a steely patina that welcomes soft eggshell tone in the targets. Bold devices exhibit impressive detail, most appreciable for the type. From the Coenen Collection." The ducaton was the largest silver coin struck in the United Provinces and most of the provinces issued it at one time or another. This subtype was struck 1774-93 and is common. In 1793-94, the United Provinces collapsed under pressure from the French Revolution and was reorganized as the puppet Batavian Republic.
