Westfriesland H3076-32026r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32026 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "West Friesland. Provincial Lion Daalder 1670 MS64 NGC. Of exceedingly rare quality for this type, normally seen weakly struck and with significant handling. This specimen displays not only gleaming argent luster at every turn, but a standout portrayal of detail in the face of the obverse figure, coupled with a refined silver patina that adds an element of luxury to this regal offering. Tied for finest graded at NGC, with none above the MS63 level seen by PCGS." "Lion" daalders were struck in Kampen and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen in collectible condition. This specimen, lustrous but lacking in detail, is exceptional for this type. Many subtypes exist with different mintmarks: KM 14.1: 1601-30 and 1650; KM 14.2: 1616-17, 1631-49; KM 14.3 (shown here): 1649-79, 1697-1700; KM 14.4: 1682, 1687; KM 14.5: 1616, 1622-29. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (48 stuivers) was the "prince" daalder (40 stuivers), the silver ducat (also 48 stuivers), the three gulden (60 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 14.3, Dav-4870.
