SB526-75208r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75208 in Stack's Bowers May 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $292.80. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. West Friesland. Lion Dollar (Daalder), 1650. NGC AU-58." "Lion" daalders were struck in Westfriesland and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen in collectible condition. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (40 stuivers) was the "Nederlandse rijksdaalder" (50 stuivers, Dav-4842), the silver ducat (48 stuivers, Dav-4908), the three gulden (57 stuivers, Dav-4961) and the ducaton (silver rider or 60 stuivers, Dav-4941). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary. This variety was struck 1649-58, 1661-79, 1697-1700. A 1650/49 overdate is reported.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-4870; KM-14.3; Delm-836.
