Utrecht 1791 gulden
This specimen was lot 75034 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Utrecht. Gulden, 1791. PCGS MS-64. This handsome piece is bathed in good amounts of rainbow toning and presents a magnetic appeal with its great strike." This type was struck 1760-65, 1776, 1780-94 and this is a common date. Similar coins are known for Holland, Overijssel, Gelderland, Zeeland and Westfriesland. The obverse legend hanc tuemur hac nitimur means, "on her we lean, it is she whom we protect." In 1796, the United Provinces collapsed under the pressure of the French Revolution and was replaced by the Batavian Republic, a French client state. The Utrecht mint is still in operation, striking euros.
